A Wellington City Councillor is taking a hard line on university students drinking in Kelburn Park

Changes to the central city liquor ban are before city councillors today.

Councillor Brian Dawson is proposing an amendment to consult on an alcohol ban at the park - flying in the face of officers' recommendations not to.

He says a ban is a blunt instrument but when they're used properly, they can be effective.

He says we need to stop encouraging the Kiwi culture of drinking to excess.

But the proposals for liquor bans don't stop at Kelburn Park.

An amendment's also been put on the table for a ban in the Kilbirnie Business Network area.
