Greater Wellington Regional Council transport bosses want a national bus driver recruitment programme

They say a shortage of drivers is adding to constraints on making improvements to the city's new bus network.

They say the average employment of bus drivers is just two to three years.

Council chief executive Greg Campbell says there's a national systemic shortage of drivers.

He says we need to grow the population of drivers and get new recruits into the industry.
