About one in five Kiwis - nearly a million - have a form of mental health need... on par with international rates.
The New Zealand Medical Journal says our current workforce of three-thousand psychologists would only be able to see 200-thousand people a year.
It mentions the Mental Health inquiry's view that we can't medicate our way out of the problem, and need to boost access to therapy by talking.
It concludes that we need to at least triple the number of working psychologists and counsellors.
