Wagner took three wickets in 28 overs on the day, helping New Zealand to within four wickets of victory.
After the opening innings were dominated by swing bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee, Jurgensen says Wagner was licking his lips for his chance.
He says Wagner made the most of his opportunity.
Sri Lanka will resume on day five on 231 for six, still needing 429 for victory.
