A cigarette appears to have played a pivotal role in bringing Wellington's Terrace Tunnel stand-off to an end
4 January 2019
A 31-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving causing injury and possession of an offensive weapon ... after spending nearly 11 hours on top of pipes at the tunnel entrance.
He'll appear in court at a later date.
Patrick Flanagan, a member of a local photographic club, caught the drama on camera.
He says things took an obvious turn when a family member arrived and handed the man what appeared to be a cigarette and a black vest to wear.
Flanagan says a short time later, the man came down.
