Kiwis are being encouraged to dispose of old tyres appropriately

This comes as a Hamilton man faces an eight and a half thousand dollar fine for burning 30 tyres - breaching a national environmental standard.

Waikato Regional Council investigations manager Patrick Lynch says often people throw a tyre or two onto a pile of green waste to help the fire.

He says most councils have facilities to dispose of tyres, if your garage doesn't take them.

Lynch says seeing plumes of black smoke and the toxic odour from even one or two burning tyres - helps most people understand it's harmful.
