Joe Schmidt, who has coached the Ireland rugby side to a Six Nations title and a first win over the All Blacks on Irish soil, is one of five coaches in the running for the gong.
Sevens coaches Allan Bunting and Clark Laidlaw, Kayaking mentor Gordon Walker and Under-17's women's football coach Leon Birnie make up the list.
The Under 17s have also been named as a finalist for the team of the year, and if they win would be the first age-group side to do so.
The winners will be announced on February 21 in Auckland.
