Residents have been complaining about brown water coming through their taps and expressed frustration at what they see as inaction by the council.
But Rangitikei deputy mayor, Nigel Belsham, says they're upgrading the water mains system, and that process has dislodged a manganese build-up.
He says the best thing for residents to do is turn their taps on and flush the build-up through.
Nigel Belsham says the water has been tested and is safe to drink.
