State Highway 73 is closed between Arthur's Pass and Jackson - due to flooding and slips.
Other parts of Arthur's Pass and Lewis Pass have strong wind warnings in place.
Part of State Highway 75 - between Little River and Duvauchelle - is under a stop-go system because of fallen power lines on the road.
Christchurch Transport Operations Centre's Janine Porter says all road users should extra care - and stay up to date with NZTA's online traffic map.
