Police were called to a motorcycle crash around 1 this afternoon on Lumsden Dipton Highway.
The rider has serious injuries and was flown to hospital by helicopter.
Initial enquiries indicate the rider's sleeping bag came loose and was pulled into the wheel arch.
Police Constable David Leach says the more gear you have the heavier the bike will be and the more difficult it can be to handle.
Motorbikes are prominent this weekend in the Southland, Central Otago and Otago areas, drawn to the Burt Munro Motor Cycle Rally at Otatara near Invercargill.
