Former Wellington mayor Ian Lawrence has died at the age of 82

Former Wellington mayor Ian Lawrence has died at the age of 82

Lawrence won the mayoralty in 1983 and served for a term.

He died on Friday night in Jerusalem, where he had been living.

Family friend and Wellington City Councillor Simon Woolf has described him as quiet, modest, and not one to promote himself.

Woolf says he was best known for being the inspiration behind the International Festival of the Arts.
