Sydney's Daily Telegraph reports the Japanese-based club will be dumped from the competition after this year, with the tournament retracting to 14 teams and a round-robin format.
It reports South Africa as being the reason for the axing, with Australia and New Zealand willing to keep propping up the team.
The conference system would be abolished as a result.
SANZAAR will release a media statement about the future of Super Rugby at 4pm on Friday.
