The 2017 French Open doubles champion has rolled his ankle during his first round match at the ATP 250 tournament in Marrakech in Morocco and has been forced to retire.
It's unclear how serious the injury is.
Venus and German partner Tim Puetz were 6-3 1-4 against Italian Simone Bolelli and Tunisia's Malek Jaziri when they called it quits.
The world number 14 ranked Kiwi is scheduled to play the Monte Carlo Masters next week with his regular partner South African Raven Klaasen.
