The camera on State Highway 1 at Kauri, just north of Whangarei, has collected more than 4.8 million dollars worth of tickets over 12 months.
Police say there have been no serious fatal crashes on the high risk section of road since the speed camera was installed.
But AA spokesman Mike Noon says the number of tickets being issued shows the camera is failing and motorists are not changing their driving behaviour and slowing down.
Noon is calling for better signage to warn motorists of the camera's presence.
