The Education Amendment Bill, which will push the school starting age back to five years old, has passed its third reading in Parliament.
The previous Government enabled four-year-olds to start - if they were enrolled as part of a cohort.
Cohort entry allows them to start school at the beginning of the term closest to their fifth birthday, rather than on their fifth birthday or soon afterwards.
NZEI President, Lynda Stuart, says they believe it's not appropriate for children to start school before they're five.
She says it gives children the opportunity to be in early childhood settings.
