In Glenfield on the North Shore, a crash which damaged a power pylon could result in a lengthy power outage for much of the surrounding area because winds are too strong to replace the damaged pole on Roberts Rd.
Vector crews are on high alert in Auckland in case of more power outages are caused by the weather.
Near Tauranga, some 600 homes are also without electricity.
Omanawa and Omokoroa are the affected areas.
Omanawa may not have a resolution until after midnight.
Omokaroa lost power because of a crash this afternoon, but supply is due to be restored any time now.
