A powerful earthquake has struck Papua New Guinea

The shallow 7.5 magnitude quake was centred about 45 kilometres northeast of Kokopo city, at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

It happened about 11am local time -- or 1am New Zealand time.

Our Ministry of Civil Defence has been assessing the quake, with the assistance of science advisors.

It says based on current information, there is NO tsunami threat to New Zealand.
