The Kiwi's hit just seven fairways but scrambled to a six-under-par 64 in the opening round.

Lee's one shot behind leader and defending champion Brooks Koepka who shot a course record 63 - a player he's impressed by.

Anxious times for the New Zealand cricket team as they pack their coffins ready to head off to the World Cup on Sunday.

Wicketkeeper batsman Tom Latham's left middle finger is in a splint after taking a knock to the tip during the final warm-up game against Australia last week in Brisbane.

Back-up wicketkeeper Tom Blundell now comes into the reckoning as a starter if Latham struggles for fitness in the early stages of the campaign.

The All Blacks sevens have welcomed back Scott Gregory and Vilimoni Koroi from injury for next week's World Series event in London.

Cyclist George Bennett has improved two places to 8th overall after stage five of the Tour of California.

He's 34 seconds behind leader Tejay van Garderen.

Former top 150-ranked player Sacha Hughes nee Jones has been appointed as the new captain of New Zealand's Fed Cup tennis team.

She will take the team to Kuala Lumpur for next month's Asia Oceania tournament.

Play's underway in the Football Ferns pre-World Cup warm-up match against the USA in St Louis.
