Areta Koopu has been made a Dame for her services to Maori and the community.
She says she was fortunate enough to have inspirational people in her life, like her parents, who strongly pushed for her to get a good education.
She says her parents got that from Sir Apirana Ngata - whose children she grew up with.
Dame Areta says other inspirations include the Maori Women's Welfare League presidents who came before her.
