MetService meteorologist Peter Little says there'll be bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms effecting much of north and central New Zealand.
He says north-east gales are also expected in Auckland today, and southerly gales in Wellington are expected to become severe this afternoon.
Little says it's the result of low pressure systems in the Tasman, and warm temperatures in the North Island.
He says the South Island is largely in for a fine day, apart from some showers in Southland.
However, snow is expected to fall on higher parts of the Crown Range Road, Milford Road and Lindis Pass tomorrow.
Auckland Transport has warned commuters the weather could cause disruptions to ferry services.
It's also warning cyclists and pedestrians to take care and watch out for debris in strong gales and heavy rain.
