The overwhelming majority of children being removed from their families, are Maori

The overwhelming majority of children being removed from their families, are Maori

A Newsroom investigation has sparked debate about Oranga Tamarki's attempt to take a newborn baby from its Maori mother while they were still in hospital.

Maori Midwives chief Jean Te Huia says there are also cases of children being uplifted at daycare and school.

She says around 90 per cent of babies uplifted are Maori.

Te Huia says she wants to know why Maori babies are the majority.
