The teachers' pay dispute is finally over

The teachers' pay dispute is finally over

After months of dispute and industrial action, secondary teachers have voted to ratify the government's collective agreement.

They join primary and area school teachers who also voted yes.

But PPTA president Jack Boyle says the voting was close-run... with just 65 percent voting in favour.

A freight company has received a hefty fine, after a serious safety breach where two rail wagons rolled more than 400 metres down an Auckland railway.

Daily Freight was sentenced today in the Auckland District Court and fined 234-thousand-dollars for the 2017 incident.

NZTA Regulatory General Manager Kane Patena says the wagons uncoupled on a busy track, endangering the Auckland metro rail system, and rolling more than 400 metres before derailing.

The NZ Transport Agency's detailed investigation found Daily Freight left an unsupervised and untrained employee to shunt the wagons - and then failed to report the incident promptly.

Mr Patena says it was a very concerning near-miss and it's sheer luck no one was hurt.

Viruses are the most common cause of pneumonia.

A landmark international study into the lung infection has brought researchers closer to finding a vaccine that could save thousands of children worldwide.

The study involved seven countries and nearly 10,000 children, and pin-pointed the viruses and bacteria that were most likely to lead to it.

University of Otago Professor David Murdoch was involved in the study and says by knowing what viruses are most harmful, can help prevention and treatment methods.

The Silver Ferns have booked a spot in the Cadbury Netball series final after a dominant victory over Fiji.

New Zealand's won 88-30 in South Auckland, and will face the New Zealand men's side in tomorrow's final.

Across the ditch, Netball Australia's announced it will bid for the 2027 World Cup.

The tournament will be played in Sydney and regional New South Wales, if the bid is successful.

Sydney held the 2015 World Cup.
