A 1.1 million dollar boost to help a popular Northland beach be visitor-ready

A 1.1 million dollar boost to help a popular Northland beach be visitor-ready

Matapouri Beach gets 1000 visitors a day during the summer.

It's also home to the popular Mermaid Pools which local hapu placed a rahui over earlier this year due to degradation.

Whangarei mayor Sheryl Mai has welcomed the funding.

She says they'll be ready for the steady influx of people who have discovered the beach, pools and general coastline.

The funding is part of a 12 million dollar announcement by the government to help regions struggling under the surge of tourists.
