MetService says there's a chance some of the thunderstorms may become severe.
It says they could bring damaging wind gusts of 110 kilometres an hour or stronger, mainly near the coast.
They are set to hit Northland to Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula this afternoon and early evening.
Bay of Plenty and the ranges of Gisborne are in the firing line from late afternoon through to tonight.
MetService says wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous.
