Freight is set to be the winner out of a massive investment in the rail line to Whangarei

Freight is set to be the winner out of a massive investment in the rail line to Whangarei

The Provincial Growth Fund is providing almost 95 million dollars to upgrade the line between Swanson and Whangarei.

KiwiRail Group chief executive Greg Miller says eighteen million tonnes of cargo are transported on Northland roads every year.

He says in 2000 they carried a million tonne - and they're hoping to get back to moving that much in the near future.
