Wellingtonians are being urged not to panic about a mysterious lack of Kereru
17 September 2019
Just three of the native birds have been spotted so far in the 2019 Great Kereru Count.
In recent years, Kereru sightings averaged 150 a day during the annual September initiative.
Greater Wellington's environmental monitoring officer Faline Drummond says they're not concerned yet.
She says she won't worry about it until a few more weeks, but if they haven't turned up by the end of September that would be very unusual.
