25-year-old Shayne Heappey, a Nomad's Christchurch chapter member, was stabbed and cut 14 times during a brutal December attack.
He died from the injuries.
51-year-old Richard Sim faces more than two-years in prison, after tracking Heappey down over a small debt.
He was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to injure.
Four other people have been charged with Heappey's death - including two charged with murder, due to stand trial in March.
