Police are looking for witnesses following an attempted burglary in tjhe west Auckland suburb of Te Atatu, which left one person critically injured

Two men were found breaking into a van just before 4 this morning.

One of the offenders fled in a vehicle while the second man engaged in an altercation with the van's owner - at some stage losing consciousness.

It was initially reported as a head injury but it's not clear at this stage what caused the loss of consciousness.

Both men were taken to hospital but the van's owner has since been released, while the offender remains critical.

Police would like to speak to the man who left the scene.
