Paul Henare is leaving the Tall Blacks to take up a coaching opportunity in Japan

The decision ends a 17-year involvement with the team.

He had nine years as a player, three as an assistant coach and the last five at the helm.

Basketball New Zealand boss Iain Potter describes Henare's legacy.

Henare's also expected to leave his post as assistant coach at Melbourne United.
