Cheika and Castle reportedly got into an argument at a Wallabies team reception at the Australian embassy in Tokyo, days before the pool game against Wales.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports Cheika pulled his players from attending, leading Castle to go above him to rugby director Scott Johnson who recruited a small group by way of compromise.
Cheika then had a change of heart, only to find out Castle went around him.
Former Wallaby Morgan Turinui was required to break up the tense scenes.
