Wellington's mayor-elect has gone across the political spectrum to choose his deputy
25 October 2019
Andy Foster has confirmed Green Party councillor Sarah Free as the city's deputy mayor.
Foster is centre-right politically, but it's believed the decision's largely come down to appeasing the large left influence on the council.
Free's been a councillor since 2013, and Foster describes her as experienced and personable with a real heart for the city.
He acknowledges they don't exactly have similar political leanings, but they both care about important issues for Wellington - like the environment and transport.
Meanwhile, today's the deadline for former mayor Justin Lester to call for a voting recount after losing by just a 62-vote margin.
