The government says changes to the Overseas Investment Act aren't designed to block foreign investment

The government's announced its tightening up foreign investment rules - allowing it to veto investments in companies it believes are critical to security or democracy.

Associate Finance Minister David Parker says it would only be used rarely - and there's a lot for investors to like about the reforms too.

He says they're deregulating other parts of the act such as commercial leases - and putting in a timeframe for decisions to be made.
