John O'Neill - who served two stints as Rugby Australia chief executive, including helping oversee the removal of New Zealand as 2003 World Cup co-host has been approached to take over as chairman.
The Australian reports O'Neill is mulling an offer, but would want to appoint his own board as well as CEO which would mean goodbye Raelene Castle.
Current chair Cameron Clyne is poised to leave early next year, but the drums are beating for an early exit as Rugby Australia heads to market for a new broadcast deal.
