A day after a gnarly injury, Ricardo Christie has knocked one of the best out of world title contention

The Kiwi has beaten world number four Filipe Toledo in the round of 32 at the season-ending World Surf League event in Hawaii.

The Brazilian was in with a chance to claim his first world crown.

Earlier in the competition Christie required 10 stitches on a bone-deep wound to his left shin.

He'll face Aussie Jack Freestone for a spot in the semi-finals.
