18-year-old Jayden Breakwell's been jailed for two years and eight months at the High Court in Christchurch.
He drove a carload of teens that fled police in Fendalton in October - and fatally hit 64-year-old hospital worker Kenneth McCaul.
One passenger broke his neck in the crash - and had to relearn how to walk.
Justice Cameron Mander told the court he accepts a statement by Breakwell's family that he's easily influenced.
But he says he was driving - and it was his choice not to stop for police.
Mander told Breakwell if he ever feels himself being led astray again - to think about his victims and what he owes them.
