The 37-year-old former Marlborough Boys' College employee is understood to be the first female teacher to be convicted and sentenced for the crime.
Herald chief crime reporter Anna Leask says the Crown wanted her to spend six years behind bars - but the judge made significant discounts for the early guilty plea and her mental health issues.
The woman's lawyer is appealing the judge's decision to decline name suppression, so she remains anonymous for now.
