    Black Caps coach Gary Stead has revealed Tim Southee wanted to play in the third cricket test against Australia


    The New Zealand quick was a surprise omission from the starting XI with Matt Henry preferred for his extra pace.

    Stead says they were also weary of the workload of Tim Southee throughout the summer.

    He says it was tough to tell Southee he wasn't playing.



    Play will resume at 12.30pm, with Australia on 283 for three.
