Roger Federer is talking down his chances of a deep run as the Australian tennis Open gets underway in Melbourne

The world number three six times for champion hasn't played a tournament in the lead up to the first Grand Slam of the season.

He takes on American Steve Johnson in the first round and says while he's practiced well there's no substitute for match play.

Serena Williams begins her quest for a record equalling 24th Grand Slam title against Russian Anastasia Potapova.

Defending champion Naomi Osaka is just getting underway on centre court against Czech Marie Bouzkova.
