A crew of three from the United States have died, after their aerial water tanker crashed while battling blazes in southern New South Wales

Local ground crews lost contact with the C130 Hercules in the Snowy Monaro region early this afternoon.

The plane - which could carry 15,000 litres of water - was operated by Canadian firm Coulson Aircrane.

Initial reports say it impacted the ground heavily, and there was a large fireball.
