A Christchurch man who allegedly coughed on supermarket shoppers has drummed up fear in the community

38-year-old Raymond Coombs has appeared by video link in the Christchurch District Court - and remanded in custody until Covid-19 test results areback.

He's facing charges of criminal nuisance and failing to follow a Medical Officer of Health's orders.

Newstalk ZB reporter Amber Allott was in court - where Judge Jane McMeeken commented on the gravity of the offending.

She told the court she considers this serious offending - which has caused concern all over the country.

The police prosecutor says they've had many concerned calls from Coombs' fellow shoppers.
