Wind gusts of 63 kilometres an hour were recorded this morning in Banks Peninsula and 80 kilometres an hour at the windy outpost of Nugget Point in coastal Otago.
Meteorologist Andrew James says wind gusts are expected to pick up for both areas through to the early hours of tomorrow morning.
James says the cold weather is expected to persist throughout the country until the weekend.
