Wellington's early wave alert system will be the first of its kind in New Zealand

Wellington City Council is in talks with NIWA to develop an early reporting system, after six metre waves struck the capital's south coast last week.
NIWA Scientist Richard Gorman says other councils with residents living on coastlines, are welcome to approach them to design something similar.
He says if you want to predict when the waves will become dangerous, there's a lot you need to consider about the local setting.
