Two fires in Auckland have highlighted the importance of smoke alarms and sprinkler systems

Fire and Emergency says a rest home and doctor's surgery were saved yesterday ... because sprinklers contained the blazes.

Fire risk management principal advisor Mike Shaw says they ensured minimal damage to property - and both businesses have been able to stay open.

He says smoke alarms also alerted staff, who promptly evacuated all occupants to safety.
