NIWA's flagship research vessel Tangaroa will sail out of Wellington Harbour today for the first scientific voyage since the lockdown.
It's heading to the Campbell Plateau south of the country, to undertake surveillance of the seabed to better understand the biodiversity of habitats in commercial fishing areas.
NIWA fisheries scientist Owen Anderson says keeping crew safe is a high priority.
He says they are going to have staggered meal times, and use disinfectant around the ship regularly -- with hand sanitiser around the corridors and stairwells.
