The women flew into Auckland from the UK, and were allowed to leave managed isolation early on compassionate grounds - without being tested.
They drove to Wellington, where it was discovered they had the virus.
Regional Public Health has today confirmed a friend visited the sisters before they were tested in Wellington.
A spokesperson says they remained outside and maintained physical distance, but are isolating as an extra precaution.
