The man, a 39 year-old Rwandan refugee, worked as a volunteer for the cathedral and had been in charge of locking up the building on Friday night.
Prosecutor Pierre Sennes says he is being held to clear up inconsistencies in his schedule.
Investigators say three fires were started at the cathedral and there were no signs of a break-in.
