Frank Chen was found out after a whistleblower alerted the Commerce Commission and a covert surveillance operation was conducted on his Gold Chick poultry farm.
His offending spanned from September 2015 to October 2017.
Chen has been sentenced to a year's home detention.
He escaped jail after a 50-thousand-dollar donation to the SPCA, and pleading guilty.
Herald reporter Sam Hurley says because of the tough financial times due to Covid-19, the judge took account of the fact that if Chen's business were to close, his employees would be out of work.
