Figures released by Christchurch NZ show a four percent increase in spending last month compared to the same time a year ago.
Home, hardware and electrical are the big winners, up 26 per cent - and apparel and personal spending is up 16 percent
Accommodation and fuel are down 41 per cent and 10 per cent respectively
Spokeswoman, Anna Elphick, believes pent up demand and eased restrictions on movement are behind the rise
But she's warning it's not known how long the sugar rush will last - and there are challenging times ahead
