A man has died after fleeing from police in the Hastings suburb of Flaxmere

A man has died after fleeing from police in the Hastings suburb of Flaxmere

The incident started to unfold at about half-past-eleven last night, when he failed to stop his vehicle after being told to on Henderson Road.

A pursuit was then underway before the vehicle came to a stop a short time later on Swansea Road.

Police say the 39-year-old driver then got out of his car, which is about the time when an officer deployed their taser twice, but it does not appear to have made contact with the person.

The driver then assaulted an officer before fleeing the scene on foot.

The chase ended when the driver was located at a nearby property - but he then suffered what appears to have been a medical event, and died at the scene.

Police administered first aid and called an ambulance, but were unable to save him.
