The South Canterbury DHB's approved a 30-million-dollar upgrade for Timaru Hospital.
It will start with a complete overhaul of the Clinical Services Building.
Next will be a refurbishment of the children's and maternity wards - then building a new treatment and rehabilitation unit.
Mayor Nigel Bowen says it will mean a lot, to a lot of people.
He says the hospital looks after 60-thousand people - and treats patients from as far away as the Mackenzie Region.
